REVIEW: BOY NASH - GOD'S IMAGE 2

It is very true to the sense of the very quote that “Music has a universal appeal.”  There is also this school of thought, which I believe strongly, which reverberates that music should center on pillars of positive messages or if negative – intended to cause a change in a bad phenomenon. A listen to most music currently circulating around goes contrary to the foundations on which music was built on. Nowadays most music portray lyrics of sado masonism (S&M), illicit drugs use, sexual prowess, “thug life” , pleasures in social vices and its ilk. Very few music truly inspires the soul and one of them is certainly Boy Nash’s “GOD’S IMAGE 2” also dubbed “INSTINCT TO INCREASE.”

Boy Nash – a London based Ghanaian rapper in his new EP “GOD’S IMAGE 2” explores Biblical themes like “the value and purpose of life”, “money”, “positive conceitedness” and “love.” Aided by the production of FJAE, God’s Image 2 presents an unending and valuable cornucopia of value life lessons.

“DEEP THOUGHTS” – the first song on the album pays homage to spoken word. It combines spoken word, rap and soft chorus to produce a poetic effect. Boy Nash employs juxtapositions to teach didactic lessons. Lyrics like “…..and my birthday are my worst days”, “alcohol reveals the next you” and “life is a gamble roll the dice” suggest a person in a sad and confusing situation in need of an immediate redemption from life’s adversity.

“DESTINY” – this song commences with a narrative then switches to a woozy interlude which follows an unnamed narrator searching for answers which he, the narrator, knows he will never find. This piece talks of unhealthy and unsteady relationship and the narrator desire to save the day despite the obvious conclusion the relationship presents. 

“VISION AND PURPOSE” – Very much like the first song, this song explores the possibility of perfection in an imperfect world and also how people are faced with various elements of self-destruction. The instrumental of this song consists of a live piano and drums together with the album's predominately soft chorus gives a passionate and soul-touching feeling. This song also combines two languages “Twi” and “English” in a side by side fashion.

"SIKA" – The language of this song switches between transliteration to twi and pidgin. This song may seem awkward to those who has little or no acquaintances with Akan (twi) and Pidgin. The message is however clear; it talks of how humans have to earn money legitimately and spending it on pleasing one’s soul.

"HARD CANDY"– is a three-minute fifty second electro-hop song performed by Boy Nash. Arguably the most distinguishable song of the album talks of a come-back from a break. The lyrics also portrays that of success after a long break of resting of hibernation.

"SLAVE CHANT" – is a spoken word which preaches about Pan-Africanism This song talks of how black women tend to bleaching in the name of beauty and also of how Blacks in Europe are suffering in silence.

"AGAPE LOVE" – This song features vocals from Don Diva. The lyrics of this song seems to question the value of life and how every choice seems to define our lives forever. The lyrics also suggest with elements of love – both parental, sexual and as the title suggest “Agape love.”

"HAPPINESS" – This piece is a conversation or rather a speech from an unnamed female narrator who is ecstatic about being happy because she has received a chocolate(a gift) from a friend but unfortunately has to shelved the eating for another day because she is on diet. The narrator also talks about being in a good mood and celebrating with a drink or two.

All in all, “GOD’S IMAGE 2” is an interesting piece of work which is worth listening to.  This album is not escapist as most albums on the market but one which motivates you to be confident, question the status quo, believe in one’s self and lastly enjoying life whilst you’ve got it.
